The university of california university system is facing some financial challenges. In regards to the seismic repair issues, they were being faced with condemnation if it wasn't repair. Sorta like the oakland bay bridge. The university didnt want to assume the 400 million dollar bill for repairing the stadium so they moved it from the university to the athletic department.

The seismic design had to not only meet new seismic standards, but also meet historic preservation standards. also the stadium needed to be modernized to current standard

Cal Berkely is a great school, just facing alot of though expenses in the nation's most expensive area.Its been a struggle even without the extra charge for the stadium.

For geographic challenge Berkeley is a different town than oakland (where there are some tough city problems, simply they cannot afford to build new stadium for either the a's or the raiders. The 49ers left san Francisco because they wanted the city to build a new stadium. San Francisco felt it was the owners responsibility. and btw the giants paid for their baseball stadium and the warriors are moving from oakland to another coliseum in san Francisco
